Claude Opus 4.7 Is Out β€” Our First Take 🧠

Anthropic has released Claude Opus 4.7. Opus 4.6 has been central to our workflow β€” it powers Claude Code, our ⭐ recommended agent for complex tasks β€” so any new Opus release is worth paying attention to. That said, our first impression is that this isn't the across-the-board leap some might expect. Here's what we know and what we think.

Where Opus 4.6 Sits in Our Stack​

Claude Code is the team's recommended agent for complex, multi-file tasks (see AI Coding Agents), and Opus 4.6 is the model behind its strongest capabilities. On SWE-Bench Pro, Opus 4.6 represents the upper bound of single-model coding performance β€” the Copilot Rubber Duck post showed that Sonnet 4.6 with cross-model review closes 74.7% of the gap to Opus 4.6, which tells you how high that bar actually is.

The broader landscape has strong competition too β€” GPT-5.4 and Gemini 2.5 Pro are both capable alternatives β€” but for agent-driven coding workflows, Opus 4.6 has been the benchmark. That's why a new version matters: even a small shift at the top changes the calculus for everyone building on these models.

What We Know About Opus 4.7​

Not enough yet. Anthropic's announcement page has the official details β€” benchmarks, feature highlights, and availability. We'd rather point you there than summarize claims we haven't independently verified. What follows is our initial reaction based on early signals, not a deep analysis.

Our Initial Reaction​

Our first impression is cautious. Opus 4.6 already sets a high bar, and from what we've seen so far, 4.7 doesn't clear it by an obvious margin. But first impressions are just that β€” we'll be running it through our actual workflows before drawing conclusions.

For the team, the question isn't "is 4.7 better on benchmarks" β€” it's "does it make Claude Code noticeably better at the tasks we actually do?" Those two things don't always correlate. A model can improve on benchmark suites while behaving identically (or worse) on the specific patterns your team relies on. Model upgrades sometimes improve some capabilities while regressing others. We've seen that before.

That said, every new generation is worth evaluating seriously. Improvements may show up in areas we haven't tested yet β€” longer context handling, edge-case reasoning, or subtler planning quality. We're not dismissing 4.7; we're just not ready to recommend switching yet.
